Abstract
A review of statistical information on inspections conducted by the Ministry of Labor and Promotion of Employment was conducted to provide elements for improving the generation of statistical information for planning and management of the inspection system. The review included analysis of the conceptual framework and indicators, comparability over time of indicators, use of statistical classifications, thematic coverage, consistency of information, and dissemination of information. The Peruvian labor market is characterized by a large informal sector, with 36.7% of the economically active population (PEA) employed in the private sector. The private sector is the largest employer, with 5.61 million people, followed by independent workers, who account for 36.5% of the PEA. The sector public employs 7.9% of the PEA, with 1.2 million people. The "rest" category includes mostly domestic workers and practitioners, accounting for 4% of the PEA. The distribution of the PEA by geographic area shows that 64% of the PEA is located in urban areas, with Lima Metropolitan concentrating 28% of the PEA. In rural areas, there is a higher prevalence of subemployment and precarious labor, but unemployment is very low. The PEA can be classified according to who demands work: the public sector, the private sector, and independent workers who are both demanders and suppliers of work. This classification is known as the market structure and presents the various labor segments that make it up.
