Abstract
The group, formed by USAID KISAN II partner Om Shree Ram Khadya Udhyog, provided valuable knowledge to farmers on cultivating high-value crops and proper post-harvest handling. KISAN II support also enhanced Om Shree Ram Khadya Udhyog's operations, enabling the company to invest in upgrades, double its milling capacity, and produce quality fine rice that makes up 80 percent of its output. The Ramjanaki Farmers' Group's training programs empowered farmers to adopt improved agricultural practices, resulting in significant yield and crop quality improvements. Jag Narayan Ahir, a farmer from a marginalized community, was one of the beneficiaries of the program. He transitioned from cultivating low-yielding coarse rice and limited vegetables to high-value crops like fine rice, winter maize, and a diverse range of vegetables grown across three seasons. By adopting improved technologies and integrating pest management practices, Jag Narayan realized a significant boost in yield and crop quality, and received better prices from the rice mill. The installation of an irrigation system in Jag Narayan's community in 2023 marked another significant turning point for the farmer. With access to a reliable water source, he was able to farm year-round, further increasing his yields and income. Om Shree Ram Khadya Udhyog also connected Jag Narayan with a valuable network of agrovets for essential inputs, traders for market access, and Shivaraj Municipality for potential agriculture subsidies. As a result, Jag Narayan's income increased by 67 percent, allowing him to invest in crops, provide for his family comfortably, secure his children's education, and even save over NRs. 106,000 (USD 798) a year. The success of Jag Narayan and other farmers in the Ramjanaki Farmers' Group has inspired 11 fellow farmers to follow suit and expand their own vegetable farming efforts. USAID KISAN II is transforming the lives of Nepali farmers, empowering 48,840 farmers to significantly increase their yields. This translates to impressive increases in sales, averaging 264 percent. By facilitating the installation of irrigation systems, nearly 25,000 farmers (70 percent female, 85 percent from marginalized groups) can now cultivate high-value crops year-round on over 9,500 hectares, sustainably increasing local income and food security. The combination of technical assistance, market access, and irrigation has been instrumental in boosting farmers' yields and incomes. Jag Narayan's story is a testament to the impact of this approach, as he has diversified crop production, improved his yield and quality, and increased his income. The success of the Ramjanaki Farmers' Group and other similar initiatives highlights the potential for agricultural development to transform the lives of marginalized communities in Nepal.
