Abstract
Ltd. survey was conducted in February 2016, targeting households in various communities. The survey aimed to gather information on household demographics, living conditions, and access to electricity and lighting. Respondents were asked about their household composition, tenure, and housing conditions, including the type of construction materials used for walls and roofs. The survey also inquired about the sources of lighting used by households, with electricity/light being the most common source. However, many households reported using alternative sources such as kerosene lamps, candles, and solar lanterns due to the unavailability or unreliability of electricity/light. The survey found that households with illegal connections to the electricity/light grid were more likely to use alternative sources of lighting. Respondents were also asked about their experiences with electricity/light fluctuations, surges, and outages. Many reported facing problems with light bulbs burning out, appliances malfunctioning, and electrical fires. The survey found that households with illegal connections were more likely to experience these problems. The survey also explored the benefits of having regular electricity/light supplied to homes. Respondents identified improved safety, reduced risk of fire and electrical shock, and better reliability of electricity/light as key benefits. Many also expressed a willingness to pay a premium for a safe and reliable electricity/light connection. In terms of household budget, the survey found that many households struggled to afford electricity/light, with some relying on alternative sources of lighting. The survey also found that households with bank accounts were more likely to have access to electricity/light. The survey's findings suggest that access to reliable and safe electricity/light is a significant challenge for many households in the communities surveyed. The data highlights the need for improved infrastructure and services to address these challenges and improve the quality of life for households in these communities.
