Abstract
The programme is designed to provide a structured approach to language learning, with a focus on building children's confidence and skills in reading, writing, and speaking. The programme is divided into three main sections: Letters and Sounds activities, Story-based activities, and Rotation group activities. Each section is designed to cater to different learning styles and needs, and is intended to be used in conjunction with the Two-week planner, which provides a detailed schedule of activities for the two-week cycle. The programme emphasizes the importance of building a toolkit of resources, including puppets, sequence pictures, Big Books, and templates for making little books. It also suggests that teachers use a variety of materials, such as picture books, shopping flyers, and magazines, to create a rich and engaging learning environment. Assessment in Grade R is informal, and teachers are encouraged to remain aware of each child's language and literacy strengths, challenges, and progress. The programme provides opportunities for assessment, including rotation group activities and paper-based activities, which allow teachers to focus on individual children's progress. The programme also emphasizes the importance of language learning opportunities throughout the day, including transition times, show and tell, snack times, and morning ring. Teachers are encouraged to be responsive to what interests their children and to use these opportunities to build language through questions, comments, and conversations. The programme is designed to be flexible and adaptable, and teachers are encouraged to use their own creativity and initiative to make the programme work for their learners. The programme provides a range of resources, including templates, activity pages, and photocopiable resources, which can be used to support the programme. In terms of implementation, the programme suggests that teachers start with the Two-week planner and use it to guide their teaching over the two-week cycle. The planner provides a detailed schedule of activities, including Letters and Sounds activities, Story-based activities, and Rotation group activities. Overall, the Stellar programme is designed to provide a structured and engaging approach to language learning for Grade R learners. It emphasizes the importance of building children's confidence and skills in reading, writing, and speaking, and provides a range of resources and activities to support this goal. Letters and Sounds activities are designed to help children learn the sounds and letters of the alphabet, and to develop their phonological awareness. These activities include games, songs, and rhymes that are designed to make learning fun and engaging. Story-based activities are designed to help children develop their reading and comprehension skills. These activities include reading stories, discussing the plot and characters, and using visual aids to support comprehension. Rotation group activities are designed to provide opportunities for children to work in small groups and to develop their social and communication skills. These activities include games, role-playing, and group discussions that are designed to promote social interaction and language development. The programme also emphasizes the importance of assessment and evaluation, and provides opportunities for teachers to assess children's progress and adjust their teaching accordingly. The programme suggests that teachers use a range of assessment tools, including observation, questioning, and paper-based activities, to evaluate children's language and literacy skills.
