Abstract
The programme consists of several components, including story packs, teacher's guides, workbooks, and parent meeting guides. The story packs feature a series of stories, including "Tortoise and his shell," which is used to strengthen children's oral language and emergent literacy skills. The programme is structured around a two-week cycle, with each cycle focusing on a specific story and set of activities. The activities are designed to promote language and literacy development in young children, with a focus on creating a supportive and engaging learning environment. The programme's approach is based on the idea that learning is a journey that requires time, practice, and a safe space to develop new skills. The programme's authors draw on research and best practices in early childhood education to create a comprehensive and effective programme for Grade R teachers. The programme's components include story packs, which feature a Big Book, puppets, and sequence pictures, as well as a Teacher's Guide for parent meetings and workbooks for teachers. The workbooks are designed to deepen emergent literacy content knowledge and strengthen classroom practice and parent engagement. The programme's approach to teaching and learning is centered on the idea of creating a supportive and engaging learning environment. The programme's authors emphasize the importance of speaking to children in a way that is supportive and encouraging, and of creating opportunities for children to practice and develop new skills. The programme has been developed and refined through a collaborative process involving educators, researchers, and community partners. The programme's authors acknowledge the contributions of a range of individuals and organizations, including the Western Cape Metro South Education District officials and teachers, the Western Cape Provincial and District Education Department officials, and a range of partners and donors. The programme's second edition has been made possible through the support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The programme's contents are the responsibility of Wordworks and do not necessarily reflect the views of USAID or the United States Government.
