Abstract
The workshop is structured around five modules, each focusing on a specific aspect of social norms programming. Module 1, Introduction, sets the stage for the workshop by defining social norms and their relation to behavior. Participants learn to distinguish between norms, attitudes, and behaviors, and understand how social norms influence health and other behaviors. The module also explores the importance of normative influence within the socio-ecological framework for health and well-being. Module 2, Assessment, focuses on the value of norms assessments for informing program design and implementation strategies. Participants learn to identify the importance of norms assessments, practice using participatory methods for gathering community-level information, and reflect on how to integrate norms assessment findings into new or ongoing projects. Module 3, Design, delves into the design of norms-shifting interventions. Participants learn to identify the differences between norms-shifting interventions and other social behavior change interventions, recognize common characteristics of a community-based NSI, and discuss strategies to integrate social norms shifting into project design. Module 4, Measurement, explores the importance of monitoring and learning to gauge and address signs of norms shifting at the program level. Participants learn to distinguish among data gathering approaches, including types of indicators, for activity monitoring to track shifts in norms, diffusion effects, and the quality of implementation. Module 5, Scale-Up, focuses on the scale-up of norms-shifting interventions, including adaptation, expansion, and institutionalization. Participants learn to discuss key scale-up concepts and considerations, develop a perspective of the temporal nature of scale-up, and define the seven Guideposts for designing and adapting NSI. Throughout the workshop, participants engage in various activities, including plenary discussions, group activities, and case studies. These activities are designed to facilitate learning, encourage participation, and promote the application of social norms programming principles in real-world settings. The workshop is designed to be modular, allowing participants to focus on specific aspects of social norms programming that are relevant to their needs and interests. The training program is intended to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to design, implement, and evaluate effective social norms-shifting interventions.
