Abstract
For this update, involvement of citizen science, notably via the use of the social network Facebook to collect faunistic data, allowed the list to be updated from 3 to 17 species, with 12 of them being new records for the country. These new species include Aphaena sp., Dichoptera sp., Kalidora nigromaculata, Penthicodes variegata, Polydictya tricolor, Polydictya sp., Pyrops condorinus, P. peguensis, P. spinolus, P. viridirostris, and Zanna sp. Four species are only recorded from citizen science sources, and the relevance of these sources in such studies is explained and discussed. The present paper provides a first checklist of the species of Fulgoridae of Cambodia, with comments on their distribution, together with a short list of species which may occur in the country according to their currently recorded distribution. It also provides new behavioural, ecological, and ethological information on the studied species. The nomenclature follows Nagai and Porion (1996) and Bourgoin (2016: FLOW). Data were provided by the collections of the Royal University of Phnom Penh and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, by a collecting trip in May 2015, and by a call for contribution posted on the Facebook group "Nature Cambodia" on May 18, 2015. The call for contribution resulted in the submission of photographs of Fulgoridae species, which were used to update the checklist. The photographs were sent to the first author by email, and a clear distinction is made between collection records and observation data (photos of species in natura). A selection of the photographs examined in the study have been made available on the FLOW website on the webpage of the corresponding species. The checklist includes the following species of Fulgoridae: Aphaena sp., Dichoptera sp., Kalidora nigromaculata, Penthicodes variegata, Polydictya tricolor, Polydictya sp., Pyrops condorinus, P. peguensis, P. spinolus, P. viridirostris, and Zanna sp. The distribution of these species is discussed, and new information on their behaviour, ecology, and ethology is provided. The study highlights the importance of citizen science and social media in collecting faunistic data and updating the checklist of Fulgoridae species in Cambodia. The study also provides new information on the trophobiotic interactions of some Fulgoridae species with Blattodea, including Penthicodes atomaria and Saiva gemmata. The nymph of S. gemmata is illustrated for the first time, and host-plants are documented for several species. Pyrops condorinus is reinstated as a valid species from a previous status as a subspecies of P. spinolus. The study demonstrates the importance of collaboration between researchers and the public in collecting and sharing data on Fulgoridae species in Cambodia.
