Abstract
The population growth rate was 2.8% in 2009, and 17% of the population lived in urban areas. The number of women aged 15-19 was 824,477, and the number of women aged 15-49 was 3,192,700. The life expectancy at birth was 50 years, and the crude birth rate was 41.7 per 1,000 people. Malawi's socioeconomic indicators showed a GNI per capita of $650 in 2005, and health expenditure as a percentage of GDP was 9.3% in 2003. The country had a low adult literacy rate, with 64.1% of the population able to read and write. The adult literacy rate for women was 48.7%, and for men it was 75.5%. The gross enrollment ratio for primary school was 119.2%, and the gender parity index for net enrollment ratio was 1.6. The total fertility rate in Malawi was 5.6 in 2009, and the contraceptive prevalence rate for modern methods was 22.4% among all women and 28.1% among married women. The median age of sexual debut among women aged 25-49 was 17.3 years, and the mean ideal family size was 4.1 children. Women aged 20-24 who gave birth before age 20 accounted for 63.2% of the population. Malaria cases per 100,000 people were 22,146 in 2002, and DOTS coverage was 100% in 2007. The HIV-infected with active TB rate was 68.1% in 2007.
