Abstract
The activity aimed to improve the resilience of pastoralist communities in Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) through the development of a functional livestock market system. The activity was led by ACDI/VOCA, with Jennifer Maurer as the Activity Leader and Joe Sanders as the Chief of Party. The activity focused on four main objectives: effective management and quality assurance, grants facilities management, coordination, collaboration, and backbone support for collective impact and learning, and central support services. The activity also responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing support to communities in Wajir, Garissa, and Turkana counties. In Wajir County, the activity supported the development of a county livestock market system, which included the establishment of a county livestock market association and the development of a county livestock market plan. The activity also provided support to the Wajir County government in the development of a county integrated development plan (CIDP). In Garissa County, the activity supported the development of a county livestock market system, which included the establishment of a county livestock market association and the development of a county livestock market plan. The activity also provided support to the Garissa County government in the development of a county integrated development plan (CIDP). In Turkana County, the activity supported the development of a county livestock market system, which included the establishment of a county livestock market association and the development of a county livestock market plan. The activity also provided support to the Turkana County government in the development of a county integrated development plan (CIDP). The activity achieved several key results, including the development of county livestock market plans, the establishment of county livestock market associations, and the provision of support to county governments in the development of county integrated development plans. The activity also provided training and capacity building to county government officials, private sector actors, and community members on livestock market development and management. The activity also supported the development of a functional livestock market system in Kenya's ASAL, which included the establishment of a national livestock market association and the development of a national livestock market plan. The activity also provided support to the Government of Kenya in the development of a national livestock market policy. The activity was funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and was implemented in partnership with the Government of Kenya, private sector actors, and community members. The activity achieved several key results, including the development of a functional livestock market system in Kenya's ASAL, the establishment of county livestock market associations, and the provision of support to county governments in the development of county integrated development plans. The activity also supported the development of a Journey to Self-Reliance (J2SR) framework, which aimed to improve the resilience of pastoralist communities in Kenya's ASAL. The activity also provided support to the Government of Kenya in the development of a national J2SR framework. The activity was implemented in accordance with USAID's Global Food Security Strategy (GFSS) and the Government of Kenya's County Development Cooperation Strategy (CDCS). The activity also supported the development of a functional livestock market system in Kenya's ASAL, which included the establishment of a national livestock market association and the development of a national livestock market plan.
