Abstract
The activity began in August 2020 and was expected to conclude in August 2021. The activity was divided into three components: improving business performance and profitability for private sector recycling markets, increasing demand for recycling services among the commercial sector, and improving the business enabling environment for recycling services and materials. Component One focused on improving business performance and profitability for private sector recycling markets. The activity aimed to improve the capacity of private sector recycling companies through training and technical assistance. The activity also sought to increase the quality and quantity of recyclable materials collected by private sector recycling companies. Component Two aimed to increase demand for recycling services among the commercial sector. The activity focused on raising awareness about the importance of recycling among commercial sector companies and establishing linkages between the commercial sector and recycling service providers. The activity also sought to support commercial sector companies to develop and implement solid waste management plans. Component Three aimed to improve the business enabling environment for recycling services and materials. The activity focused on strengthening national regulatory policies for solid waste management and promoting domestic recycling through tax and trade incentives. The activity also sought to review and standardize waste collection fees for the commercial sector. The activity implemented several interventions to achieve its objectives. These included training and technical assistance to private sector recycling companies, awareness-raising campaigns to promote recycling among commercial sector companies, and support to commercial sector companies to develop and implement solid waste management plans. The activity also conducted several assessments and evaluations to assess its progress and identify areas for improvement. These included a midterm evaluation to assess the activity's progress and identify areas for improvement. The activity's progress was monitored through several indicators, including the number of private sector recycling companies trained, the quantity of recyclable materials collected, and the number of commercial sector companies that implemented solid waste management plans. The activity's sustainability and exit strategy were also developed to ensure that the activity's objectives were achieved and that the activity's benefits were sustained after its conclusion. The activity's sustainability and exit strategy included plans to transfer ownership and management of the activity's assets to the Government of Jordan and to establish a recycling industry that was self-sustaining. Overall, the USAID Recycling in Jordan activity aimed to improve private sector recycling markets and increase demand for recycling services among the commercial sector. The activity implemented several interventions to achieve its objectives and conducted several assessments and evaluations to assess its progress and identify areas for improvement.
