Abstract
The community provides a space for detailed discussions on strengthening family planning markets globally. The need for dialogue around health market development approaches for the family planning market is dire due to the involvement of multiple actors. These actors include private institutions, aid agencies, civil society groups, academics, public organizations, and governments. Each of these players has a role to play in making a market work efficiently. The HMCoP evolved in 2023 from the Total Market Approach Working Group. The change revitalized the group and provided a new lens to consider health market improvements. The Market Development Approach is a key principle of the HMCoP. This approach emphasizes the co-creation of market interventions between different market actors to create healthy markets. The HMCoP serves as a conduit for discussions and partnerships within and across different countries to facilitate healthy markets. The community has seen significant growth since its inception. The change from a working group to a broader Community of Practice has doubled the group's reach. The HMCoP now attracts over 200 members, including different market actors working in the family planning market. The sessions have become more in-depth and country-specific, focusing on market development and private sector market-based approaches. Market actors are using the sessions as a marketplace to present their work in family planning. This has enhanced learning and the formation of necessary networks and linkages to support healthy family planning markets. The HMCoP has facilitated discussions on various topics, including Nigeria and Tanzania. The sessions have focused on strengthening family planning markets globally. The community has also expanded to include discussions related to drug shops and pharmacies. The HMCoP has become a platform for sharing best practices and lessons learned in supporting pharmacies and drug shops to provide quality contraceptives. The HMCoP has become a valuable resource for market actors working in the family planning market.
