Abstract
The program's primary objective is to improve the farmers' production practices and link them with buyers. However, the farmers have been facing difficulties in accessing necessary inputs such as seed, fertilizers, and protective clothing due to their remote location. To address this issue, USAID-STAMP organized a small agricultural fair in Bende, bringing together 16 suppliers, buyers, and banks. The event provided a platform for 177 potato growers to meet with representatives from various companies, including seed companies, fertilizer and chemical suppliers, irrigation and spray equipment suppliers, and packaging distributors. The growers were able to discuss prices and supply of inputs and equipment with the suppliers, leading to a better understanding of the potential value of doing business together. The event was a success, with suppliers expressing interest in tapping into the emerging market and bank representatives showing willingness to extend credit to the farmers for the next potato growing season. The farmers were also able to purchase a number of items on the spot, including irrigation spare parts, power generators, and potato packaging materials. Josiah Mugano, a smallholder farmer, purchased seeds and pesticides and expressed his enthusiasm for future events, stating that the project is bringing meaningful development to the community. The agricultural fair has helped build sustainable relationships between the farmers and suppliers, providing a platform for additional suppliers and credit providers to work with smallholder farmers. This is expected to further expand the availability of finance and inputs, increasing farmer productivity and incomes. The event has also facilitated the exchange of information and ideas among the suppliers, enabling them to discuss shared delivery options for goods bound for Bende. The success of the agricultural fair demonstrates the potential of USAID-STAMP's approach in improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. By providing a platform for farmers to access necessary inputs and connect with suppliers and buyers, the program is helping to increase farmer productivity and incomes, ultimately contributing to the development of the community.
