Abstract
The report is prepared by RTI International and is submitted to the United States Agency for International Development. The project aims to increase the capacity of the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) to deliver Early Grade Reading (EGR) programs and improve retention in primary grades. The project has two main results: R1 focuses on increasing MoES capacity to deliver EGR, while R2 aims to improve retention in primary grades. The project has made significant progress in the reporting period. For R1, the MoES capacity to deliver EGR has been improved through the implementation of the EGR program in 15 districts. The program has been rolled out in 15 districts, with 2,500 teachers trained in EGR. The program has also established 15 demonstration plots, which have shown a 60% increase in yield compared to the control group. For R2, the project has improved retention in primary grades through the implementation of the Strengthening Reading and Basic Education in Basic Schools (SRGBV) program. The project has strengthened the capacity of MoES and education staff to implement SRGBV policies. The project has also strengthened community commitment and capacity to support SRGBV prevention and response programs. The project has also made progress in project management, planning, and implementation. The project has established a strong management team, which has ensured the effective implementation of the project. The project has also established a robust monitoring and evaluation system, which has enabled the project to track progress and make adjustments as needed. The project has also faced several challenges, including challenges in implementing the EGR program in some districts. The project has also faced challenges in strengthening community commitment and capacity to support SRGBV prevention and response programs. The project has also made progress in training events, with 17 training events completed in the reporting period. The project has also made progress in monitoring and evaluation, with a robust monitoring and evaluation system in place. The project has also made progress in financial management, with a total expenditure of $1.4 million in the reporting period. The project has also made progress in logistics and procurement, with a total of 17 procurements made in the reporting period. The project has also made progress in human resources, with a total of 17 personnel hired in the reporting period. The project has also made progress in child protection, with a total of 17 child protection cases reported in the reporting period. The project has also made progress in strengthening community commitment and capacity to support SRGBV prevention and response programs.
