Abstract
This condition can have severe consequences for both the mother and the fetus if left untreated. The Ministry of Health and Child Welfare's Health Promotion Unit and Reproductive Health Unit, with support from USAID/MCHIP, have produced a comprehensive guide to raise awareness about this critical issue. Pregnancy Induced Hypertension can manifest in various forms, including gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and eclampsia. Gestational hypertension is characterized by high blood pressure that develops after 20 weeks of gestation, while preeclampsia is a more severe condition that involves high blood pressure and damage to organs such as the kidneys and liver. Eclampsia is a life-threatening condition that involves seizures in a woman with preeclampsia. Risk factors for Pregnancy Induced Hypertension include a history of hypertension, pre-existing medical conditions such as kidney disease or diabetes, and a family history of hypertension. Women who are overweight or obese, smoke, or have a multiple pregnancy are also at increased risk. Early detection and management of Pregnancy Induced Hypertension are crucial to prevent complications and ensure a healthy outcome for both the mother and the baby. The guide emphasizes the importance of regular prenatal care, including blood pressure monitoring, to detect Pregnancy Induced Hypertension early. Women who experience symptoms such as headaches, vision changes, or abdominal pain should seek medical attention immediately. Healthcare providers play a critical role in diagnosing and managing Pregnancy Induced Hypertension, and the guide provides recommendations for treatment and management. In Zimbabwe, where this guide is being implemented, Pregnancy Induced Hypertension is a significant public health concern. The guide aims to raise awareness among healthcare providers, women, and their families about the risks and consequences of Pregnancy Induced Hypertension, as well as the importance of early detection and management. By promoting a better understanding of this condition, the guide seeks to reduce the burden of Pregnancy Induced Hypertension and improve maternal and fetal health outcomes in Zimbabwe.
