Abstract
The program aims to address the learning needs of 15 million primary grade students in seven Ethiopian languages. READ CO is implemented by Save the Children and its regional NGO partners, including Amhara Development Association, Tigray Development Association, and Adult and Non-formal Education Association of Ethiopia. The program focuses on providing children with opportunities to practice reading and improving parental and community engagement in support of children's learning to read. This is achieved through the development of a working manual for master trainers, training of level one and level two for target schools and community, and the use of a guide as a reference for training school-level and community-level reading and writing activities. The guide is developed in consultation with experts nominated by the Ministry of Education, Regional State Education Bureaus, Zonal Education Departments, and USAID/READ CO. The guide is structured into five days, with each day focusing on a specific topic. Day one covers an introduction to the READ CO program, while day two focuses on the importance of reading and writing in the mother tongue language. Day three covers the development of a reading manual, including the creation of a story, the use of pictures, and the importance of repetition. Day four focuses on the use of the reading manual in the classroom, including the role of the teacher and the importance of parental involvement. Day five covers the evaluation of the reading program, including the use of assessment tools and the importance of monitoring progress. The guide also includes a section on the use of pictures in reading, including the importance of using pictures to support reading and the use of pictures to create a story. Additionally, the guide covers the importance of parental involvement in the reading program, including the role of parents in supporting their children's reading development and the importance of involving parents in the classroom. The guide also includes a section on the evaluation of the reading program, including the use of assessment tools and the importance of monitoring progress. The READ CO program aims to improve the reading skills of children in Ethiopia, particularly in the mother tongue language. The program focuses on providing children with opportunities to practice reading and improving parental and community engagement in support of children's learning to read. The guide developed by READ CO provides a framework for implementing the program and includes a range of activities and resources to support the development of reading skills in children.
