The National Commission Consultation & Review Workshop on Stock & Risk Assessment of Selected Fisheries in Indonesia was held in October 2018 in West Java, Indonesia.
2018 · 26 pages

Abstract
The workshop aimed to facilitate the adoption of the non-equilibrium biomass dynamic model (ne-BDM) for the assessment of fish stocks in Indonesia. The event was organized by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Indonesia Sustainable Ecosystem Advanced (SEA) Project in collaboration with the Research Center for Fisheries (PURISKAN)/Research Institute for Marine Fisheries (BRPL), which was primarily involved in the assessment, and the National Commission on Fisheries Resource Assessment (KOMNAS KAJISKAN). The workshop brought together researchers, government officials, and stakeholders to review and discuss the results of the stock and risk assessment of selected fisheries in Indonesia. The assessment focused on several fisheries management areas (FMAs), including FMA 715, FMA 716, FMA 571, FMA 712, FMA 713, and FMA 714. The researchers involved in the assessment presented their findings, including the status of fish stocks and fishing effort, as well as the results of the risk assessment. The non-equilibrium biomass dynamic model (ne-BDM) was a key component of the assessment, and the workshop provided an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss and review the model's application in Indonesia. The ne-BDM is a complex model that takes into account various factors, including fish population dynamics, fishing effort, and environmental conditions. The model was developed to provide a more accurate and comprehensive assessment of fish stocks in Indonesia. The workshop also provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss and agree on the information to be presented to the National Commission Consultation & Review Meeting. The meeting was chaired by Professor Indra Jaya, Head of KOMNAS KAJISKAN, and attended by government officials, researchers, and stakeholders. The meeting aimed to review and discuss the results of the stock and risk assessment, as well as to agree on the recommendations for the management of the selected fisheries in Indonesia. The assessment results showed that the fish stocks in several FMAs were overfished, while others were underfished. The risk assessment indicated that several fisheries were at risk due to overfishing, habitat degradation, and climate change. The researchers recommended the implementation of management measures, including catch limits, fishing gear restrictions, and marine protected areas, to address the overfishing and habitat degradation issues. The workshop and the National Commission Consultation & Review Meeting were significant events in the development of fisheries management policies in Indonesia. The adoption of the ne-BDM and the implementation of management measures aimed to improve the sustainability of fisheries in Indonesia and to ensure the long-term health of the country's marine ecosystems.
