Abstract
(Project HOPE) to upgrade hospital care for pregnant women and children under 15 in Nicaragua. Project HOPE will provide medical supplies, equipment, and the services of health specialists to four community hospitals in the Esteli, Juigalpa, Boaco, and Matagalpa areas (major resettlement areas for members of the Nicaraguan Resistance and their families). The grant is part of the project"s Immediate Impact Activities Component. Specifically, Project HOPE will: (1) revitalize emergency, pediatric, childbirth, and clinical services; (2) provide essential medicines, medical supplies, and basic equipment; (3) provide short-term surgical teams and other specialists in areas such as pediatrics, anesthesia, perinatology, rehabilitation, and biomedical engineering; (4) provide continuing education and professional support in Managua for selected physicians; and (5) provide specialty services as needed.
