Grant is provided under the Asia Democracy Program to The Asia Foundation to support two activities: (1) women"s literacy training for Afghan refugees, provided by the Afghan Women"s Resource Center (AWRC); and (2) an international conference and series of community workshops on Islam and democracy, sponsored by the Cultural Council for Afghanistan Resistance (CCAR).
1992

Abstract
AWRC will establish an outreach literacy program consisting of 4 classes, each attended by 20 Afghan women refugees, in Mechanai Camp in North West Frontier Province, Pakistan (similar to a program successfully operating in Akora Camp No. 6). The courses will run 6 days a week, 3 hours a day and also cover numeracy, hand knitting, crocheting, tailoring, and basic health care. Participating women will receive a small stipend to compensate for their time spent out of home (most of the women at Akora camp used their stipends to purchase sewing machines). The CCAR conference will be held in Afghanistan (security conditions permitting, otherwise in Pakistan) in 11/92. Ten scholars and political scientists from Muslim countries will join 20 Afghans (potential leaders of a new representative government) and 5 Pakistanis to examine the theory and practice of democracy in contemporary Islamic nations. The proceedings will be published, and follow-up discussions for 400 participants will be held in Peshawar, Quetta, and provincial cities of Afghanistan (security permitting).
