Abstract
The study focused on mapping the investments and interests of US companies in Colombia, identifying areas of common interest between USAID/Colombia and the private sector, and highlighting strategies for investment in social and environmental areas. The assessment defined the concept of "US companies" in the Colombian context and created a database of US companies operating in Colombia, including information on the number of employees, investment, annual income, and sectors of operation. The study analyzed the private sector landscape and market activity in specific sectors, subsectors, and industries, as well as key geographic areas. The assessment identified areas of business interest, strategies, operations, and investment in social and environmental areas, as well as challenges and limitations. It also highlighted the potential for USAID/Colombia to partner with the private sector in areas such as investment in social and environmental initiatives, including approaches to vulnerable populations such as Afro-Colombians, indigenous peoples, women, children, youth, and Venezuelan migrants. The study found that US companies operating in Colombia have a significant presence in various sectors, including energy, finance, and manufacturing. The companies have invested heavily in Colombia, with a total investment of over $10 billion between 2014 and 2018. The assessment also identified areas of high potential for USAID/Colombia to partner with the private sector, including investment in social and environmental initiatives, such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. The PSLA recommended that USAID/Colombia develop strategies to support the private sector in areas such as investment in social and environmental initiatives, as well as in areas of high potential for partnership. The assessment also suggested that USAID/Colombia work with the private sector to identify and address challenges and limitations, such as regulatory barriers and lack of access to finance. The study concluded that the private sector has a significant role to play in supporting the development of Colombia, and that USAID/Colombia can play a key role in facilitating partnerships between the private sector and the government. The assessment provided a comprehensive analysis of the private sector landscape in Colombia and identified areas of high potential for partnership and investment. The assessment was conducted by a team of researchers from Jaime Arteaga & Asociados, with the support of USAID/Colombia and the Panagora Group. The study was based on a combination of secondary research, primary data collection, and expert interviews. The assessment was conducted between 2019 and 2020, and the final report was submitted to USAID/Colombia in September 2020. The PSLA was a valuable contribution to the understanding of the private sector landscape in Colombia and provided a comprehensive analysis of the investment and interests of US companies in the country. The assessment identified areas of high potential for partnership and investment and provided recommendations for USAID/Colombia to support the private sector in areas such as social and environmental initiatives.
