Abstract
The activity is implemented by Natural Resources Consulting Engineers, Inc. (NRCE) with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The geographic focus of the activity is Senegal, with a specific emphasis on the Ziguinchor, Sédhiou, Kolda, Kédougou, Tambacounda, and Matam Regions. The ACCES activity aims to improve access to sanitation, hygiene, and water (WASH) services in rural Senegal. The activity focuses on four key outputs: Output 1, which involves the construction of latrines and the promotion of sanitation practices; Output 2, which targets the development of WASH businesses and the promotion of financial literacy; Output 3, which focuses on the development of water supply systems and the promotion of water conservation practices; and Output 4, which involves the implementation of a monitoring and evaluation plan to track progress and identify areas for improvement. During the reporting period, October 1, 2020, to September 30, 2021, the ACCES activity made significant progress in achieving its objectives. A total of 2,500 latrines were constructed, and 15,000 people were trained in sanitation and hygiene practices. The activity also supported the development of 20 WASH businesses, which provided employment opportunities for over 100 people. In addition, the activity promoted financial literacy among 5,000 people, and 10,000 people were trained in water conservation practices. The ACCES activity also made significant progress in promoting behavior change communication (BCC) and community-led total sanitation (CLTS) practices. A total of 10,000 people were reached through BCC activities, and 5,000 people were trained in CLTS practices. The activity also supported the development of a water chlorination system in Ziguinchor, which improved access to safe drinking water for over 10,000 people. The ACCES activity has a total budget of $26,775,738, and as of September 30, 2021, $23,564,594 had been spent, representing 88% of the incremental funding. The activity has made significant progress in achieving its objectives, and it is expected to continue making progress in the coming months.
