Abstract
The project's goal is to empower women and youth, including persons with disabilities, to sustain improvements in food and nutrition security. Key interventions include the Maison Familiale Harmonieuse and Grow Up Smart approach, literacy and numeracy training, leadership training for women and youth, and a GBV prevention approach with traditional and religious leaders. The project also focuses on improving the nutritional status of pregnant and lactating women, adolescent girls, and children under five through care groups with home gardening, time-saving technologies, health system strengthening, and construction/rehabilitation/governance of multiple-use water systems. Additionally, the project aims to establish stable and more diversified livelihoods for extremely vulnerable households and very vulnerable households, especially women and youth, through training on climate-smart agriculture and sustainable land management, livestock practices improvements, private sector strengthening, and savings and internal lending communities. The Girma project is present in 622 villages in the departments of Magaria and Dungass, and has intensified implementation of its activities in these villages. The project has already completed 50% of the recommendations from the 2023 mid-term evaluation, while others are being implemented in FY24. The project has reached 800,515 direct participants, or 95% of the life of award goal, and has seen strong results due to effective household targeting, the quality and sequencing of interventions, and close collaboration between different sectors and partners. The project's theory of change remains unchanged over FY23, and annual analysis showed that pathways are still appropriate. At least 90% of outcomes have been met, including behaviors linked to the practice of handwashing with soap and water, increased access to natural resources for vulnerable populations, and improvement in young people's economic situations through business creation. The project has also seen transformative changes in FY22, including increased access to natural resources for vulnerable populations and improvement in young people's economic situations. The Girma project has developed a contingency plan to respond to the economic and trade sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States and the West African Economic and Monetary Union following the July 2023 coup d'état in Niger. The sanctions have resulted in the scarcity of basic necessities, including foodstuffs, and rising prices, which may further increase if sanctions are not lifted soon. The project aims to sustainably improve food and nutrition security, as well as the resilience of extremely and very vulnerable households, despite these challenges.
