Abstract
The quarterly report for the period October 1 – December 31, 2017, highlights progress made in achieving the program's objectives. Reading skills in upper primary school improved, with a focus on girls' education. The program implemented in-school activities, including teacher training and the distribution of educational materials, to enhance reading skills. Out-of-school activities, such as community-based literacy programs, also contributed to improved reading skills among girls. Adoption of positive sexual and healthcare-seeking behaviors among youth aged 10-19 increased, while key structural and cultural barriers for girls aged 10-19 decreased. The program provided a core HIV and violence prevention package for adolescent girls to increase their knowledge, self-efficacy, and risk reduction strategies. In-school activities, such as peer education and life skills training, were implemented to promote healthy behaviors among youth. Access to adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, including menstrual hygiene management (MHM) commodities, improved. The program implemented in-school activities, such as the construction of WASH facilities and the distribution of hygiene materials, to enhance access to WASH services. The program also emphasized integration with other initiatives, including the National Reading Program, school health days, and working with Mother Groups. Collaboration with other organizations, such as FHI 360, was also essential in achieving the program's objectives. Despite progress made, challenges were encountered, including coordination, human resources, and finance and procurement issues. The program implemented solutions to address these challenges, including the development of a performance monitoring plan and the establishment of a management information system. The quarterly report highlights progress made against the program's plan of work for FY 2018, including the implementation of in-school and out-of-school activities, the distribution of educational materials, and the provision of WASH services. The report also outlines planned activities for the next quarter, including the continuation of in-school and out-of-school activities and the implementation of new initiatives. The program's success stories, as documented in the appendices, demonstrate the impact of ASPIRE on the lives of girls and women in Malawi. These stories highlight the importance of education and health in empowering girls and promoting their well-being. Overall, the ASPIRE quarterly report for the period October 1 – December 31, 2017, provides a comprehensive overview of the program's progress and challenges. The report highlights the importance of education and health in empowering girls and promoting their well-being, and demonstrates the program's commitment to achieving its objectives.
