Abstract
The program is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by DAI Global, LLC. AVANSE focuses on strengthening private sector engagement, transferring improved agricultural technologies and practices to farmers, and rehabilitating irrigation systems. During the third quarter of fiscal year 2019, AVANSE made significant progress toward its goals despite unpredictable social-political unrest and persistent drought. The program strengthened private sector engagement through partnerships with companies such as 509 Sanitation, which will establish a modern hazardous waste management and disposal facility in Haiti. AVANSE also supported a public-private partnership to resume exports of bananas to the global market, an effort that has not been attempted in over 60 years. The project-funded mobile-based agricultural market information system, SIMA, is now fully functional. SIMA provides reliable and timely information to mobile users on the prices of various agricultural crops, empowering farmers and small-scale traders, mostly women, to bargain for fair prices when selling their products. Additionally, AVANSE completed the rehabilitation of two irrigation systems, which will improve agricultural productivity and reduce the environmental impact of farming practices. AVANSE's efforts have resulted in notable achievements, including the signing of a grant with 509 Sanitation and the establishment of a modern hazardous waste management facility. The program has also facilitated the preparation for the scheduled export of bananas to the European market. Furthermore, the rehabilitation of irrigation systems will improve agricultural productivity and reduce the environmental impact of farming practices. The AVANSE program has a strong focus on environmental security, and its efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of its activities are evident in its partnership with 509 Sanitation. The program's goal of furthering environmental security through mitigating the environmental impact of its activities is aligned with the USAID's objectives. AVANSE's work in rehabilitating irrigation systems will also contribute to environmental security by reducing the environmental impact of farming practices. AVANSE's progress in the third quarter of fiscal year 2019 demonstrates the program's commitment to promoting Haiti's agricultural potential for economic and environmental security. The program's efforts to strengthen private sector engagement, transfer improved agricultural technologies and practices to farmers, and rehabilitate irrigation systems have resulted in notable achievements. AVANSE's work will continue to contribute to the economic and environmental development of Haiti. The AVANSE program has a strong focus on empowering farmers and small-scale traders, mostly women, to bargain for fair prices when selling their products. The project-funded mobile-based agricultural market information system, SIMA, will provide reliable and timely information to mobile users on the prices of various agricultural crops. This will enable farmers and small-scale traders to make informed decisions and negotiate fair prices for their products. AVANSE's efforts to rehabilitate irrigation systems will improve agricultural productivity and reduce the environmental impact of farming practices. The program's focus on environmental security is evident in its partnership with 509 Sanitation and its efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of its activities. AVANSE's work will continue to contribute to the economic and environmental development of Haiti.
