Grant to the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) to conduct child survival activities in the Maasailand, Kibwezi, and Urban Nairobi regions of Kenya.
1986

Abstract
Interventions will include oral rehydration therapy, immunizations, nutrition education, malaria and TB control, and antenatal, perinatal, and intra partum care. To reach nomadic populations, AMREF will use its mobile integrated health services unit, which has been working in the region for 20 years. AMREF will collaborate with Kenya"s Ministry of Health and UNICEF to cover the remaining nomadic and semi-nomadic peoples in the Rift Valley and Northern Frontier District - some 20% of Kenya"s total population; much of the collaborative work will involve training other mobile units. To reach settled communities, AMREF will utilize a community-based health care approach. Community health workers and traditional birth attendants will be selected and trained, and seminars will be organized to orient all program staff to the basic concepts of community-based health care, the project objectives, and the role of each project member. Informal workshops for village development committees will also be held to acquaint them with the program.
