Abstract
The training manual was prepared by Winrock International in collaboration with the Warrap state Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Yei Agriculture Training Center, under the Cooperative Agreement No. 650-A-00-09-00003-00, Building Responsibility for Delivery of Government Services (BRIDGE) Program. The training manual is divided into seven sections, focusing on key aspects of crop production. Section 1, Introduction to Crop Production, sets the stage for the training by highlighting the existing production situation, objectives, and procedure. The learning points from this section emphasize the importance of understanding the current production situation and the need for effective crop production practices. Section 2, Crop Husbandry, covers land clearing, land preparation, planting, weeding, harvesting and drying, and storage. Session 1 on land clearing emphasizes the importance of timing and the need for effective land clearance methods. Session 2 on land preparation highlights the advantages of good land preparation, including improved soil structure and increased crop yields. The session also discusses the benefits of using hoes or ox-plows instead of molodas for land preparation. Session 3 on planting covers the objectives, procedure, and learning points for effective planting methods. The session emphasizes the importance of broadcasting and row planting, including their advantages and disadvantages. Session 4 on weeding focuses on the reasons for weeding and the methods of weed control. The session highlights the importance of effective weeding practices to prevent crop losses. Session 5 on harvesting and drying covers the objectives, procedure, and learning points for effective harvesting and drying practices. The session emphasizes the importance of selecting high-quality seeds, drying crops properly, and threshing to prevent grain loss. Session 6 on storage highlights the objectives, procedure, and learning points for effective storage practices. The session emphasizes the importance of storing crops in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent spoilage. Session 7 on protection of stored grains covers the objectives, procedure, and learning points for effective grain protection practices. The session emphasizes the importance of protecting stored grains from pests, rodents, and other environmental factors to prevent grain loss. The training manual provides a comprehensive guide for agriculture extension workers to improve crop production practices in their communities. By following the training manual, extension workers can provide effective training to farmers, leading to improved crop yields and increased food security.
