The International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) has established a standardized system for documenting genetic resources, including descriptors for banana (Musa spp.).

Abstract
The system is designed to provide a comprehensive and consistent framework for collecting, managing, and utilizing genetic resources. The descriptors are categorized into five main groups: passport descriptors, management descriptors, environment and site descriptors, characterization descriptors, and evaluation descriptors. Passport descriptors provide basic information for the general management of accessions, including registration and identification. Management descriptors provide the basis for managing accessions in a genebank and assist with their multiplication and regeneration. Environment and site descriptors describe environmental and site-specific parameters that are important for characterization and evaluation trials. These descriptors can be crucial for interpreting the results of those trials. Site descriptors for germplasm collecting are also included in this category. Characterization descriptors enable easy and quick discrimination between phenotypes. These descriptors are generally highly heritable, can be easily seen by the eye, and are equally expressed in all environments. Evaluation descriptors are susceptible to environmental differences but are generally useful in crop improvement and may involve complex biochemical or molecular characterization. The IPGRI system uses a standardized scoring, coding, and recording system for descriptor states. This system includes the use of the Système International d'Unités (SI system) for units, standard color charts for ungraded color characters, and a 1-9 scale for recording quantitative characters. The system also includes guidelines for scoring absence/presence of characters, using blanks for information not yet available, and reporting mean and standard deviation for heterogeneous accessions. The passport descriptors for banana include accession number, donor name, donor number, other numbers associated with the accession, scientific name, pedigree, accession name, local language, translation/transliteration, synonyms, acquisition date, type of material received, accession size, previous locations, and notes. The collecting descriptors include collecting institute(s), site number, collecting number, collecting date of original sample, country of collecting, province/state, department/county, location of collecting site, latitude of collecting site, longitude of collecting site, elevation of collecting site, collecting source, collecting source environment, type of sample, and status of sample. The IPGRI system provides a comprehensive framework for documenting and managing genetic resources, including banana. The standardized descriptors and scoring system enable consistent and accurate documentation, which is essential for effective management and utilization of genetic resources.
