Abstract
The consequences of early marriage can be severe, including limited access to education and economic opportunities. In some cases, early marriage can lead to increased household size, as the newlywed couple may have children soon after marriage. This can put a strain on the family's finances and resources. The benefits of delaying marriage are numerous. Education is a key factor in improving economic prospects and reducing poverty. When girls and boys stay in school, they are more likely to acquire skills and knowledge that enable them to secure better-paying jobs and improve their socio-economic status. Delaying marriage also allows individuals to pursue their dreams and aspirations, whether in education, career, or other areas of interest. In many communities, poverty is cited as a primary reason for early marriage. However, this is not always the case. In some instances, families may believe that early marriage will provide financial security, but in reality, the opposite may be true. When girls marry early, they often leave school and are unable to contribute to the household income. This can lead to increased financial burdens on the family, as they may need to support the newlywed couple and their children. The impact of early marriage on family finances can be significant. When girls marry early, they often have limited access to education and job opportunities, making it difficult for them to contribute to the household income. This can lead to increased reliance on the family's primary breadwinner, often the father or another male family member. In some cases, early marriage can also lead to increased household expenses, as the family may need to support the newlywed couple and their children. In Rwanda, for example, the agricultural development initiative aimed to improve crop yields and increase household income among farmers. This highlights the importance of education and economic opportunities in improving the socio-economic status of individuals and families. In the context of early marriage, education and economic opportunities are critical factors in reducing poverty and improving socio-economic status. When girls and boys stay in school, they are more likely to acquire skills and knowledge that enable them to secure better-paying jobs and improve their socio-economic status. Delaying marriage also allows individuals to pursue their dreams and aspirations, whether in education, career, or other areas of interest. By staying in school and pursuing economic opportunities, individuals can improve their socio-economic status and reduce the likelihood of early marriage.
