Sign inUSAID
The Global Climate Change and Sustainable Landscapes (GCC-SL) course is a two-day introduction to the concepts of forest carbon management and programming of USAID funds to design and implement projects to support developing country participation in forest- or other land-based greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation actions.

Abstract
The course is designed for USAID staff involved in the design and implementation of activities using Global Climate Change Sustainable Landscapes Pillar funding. The course objectives include describing the role of forests and other landscapes within the context of global climate change, the basic current architecture of forest-based greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation, and how USAID programs may be designed to assist countries in preparing for REDD+ readiness and related actions that support U.S. Government and international policy initiatives. Participants must first complete the Overview of Global Climate Change (GCC-101) online course and the Integrating Global Climate Change into Development (GCC-1D) classroom-based course offered at the same training location as this GCC-SL course. The course outline includes a morning session on Day 1, which covers an overview of the course and a brief review of science related to forest carbon, its measurement, and role within the broader context of global climate change. The afternoon session on Day 1 covers a brief overview of international efforts to reduce GHG emissions from forests and other landscapes, including key concepts, development history, current status, USG REDD+ Strategy implementation, and future directions. On Day 2, the morning session covers a brief recap of key forest-based mitigation concepts, social and environmental soundness, co-benefits, and an overview of USAID programming related to REDD+ at regional, national, and subnational scales. The afternoon session includes presentations of small group output and a summary review of course content, including an update on policy directions within USG, M&E for SL pillar, and conclude with evaluation and awarding of certificates. The Trainer's Guide provides detailed notes for each session, including objectives, material, PowerPoint slides, and main talking points for each slide. The Guide is designed to be used by almost any trainer knowledgeable on the subject of Sustainable Landscapes within the context of USAID, with the goal of encouraging more subject matter experts to deliver this standard course in their regions or countries, reducing reliance on USAID/E3 personnel to deliver training courses around the world. The course is designed to meet the learning objectives through adult learning methodologies, including visual, aural, and interactive presentations, theory, practice, and reflection. The Trainer's Guide recognizes that different people learn in different ways and presents material in a way that is responsive to participant needs and respectful of their varied levels of understanding on the subject matter. The course is intended for USAID staff at headquarters and field Missions who are, or may be, implementing projects that strengthen national or regional capacity to engage in forest sector emissions reductions. The course is also recommended for those with interest in learning more about sustainable landscapes/forestry, as well as national and sub-national strategies for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+), forest carbon market readiness, and forest-based mitigation projects. The Trainer's Guide includes four sections: Introduction to the Trainer's Guide, Course Description, Course Agenda - Summary, and Course Sessions - Detail. The last section comprises the bulk of the Guide and provides detailed notes for each session, including objectives, material, PowerPoint slides, and main talking points for each slide.
