Abstract
The industry has made significant improvements towards products and processes that reduce the use of fossil fuels, increase human safety, clean the environment, and lead to healthier communities and economies. The wood industry has been an integral part of human society, and visions of a sustainable future will continue to include wood. The production of wood in the European Union was satisfactory in 2018, despite political problems in the region. The Brexit and economic relationships between the United States and China gave the European market reasons to return to production and explore new growth forms. The demand for wood skyrocketed in 2019, especially for Chinese paper producers. Countries such as Brazil and Chile in Latin America are the most benefited, due to production costs below the international market and rapid growth. With the US-China trade agreements, the production in the United States remains strong for wood due to high internal demand. The top wood-producing countries in 2017 were Canada, the United States, Sweden, Finland, and Germany. The top exporters of forest products in 2017 were the Russian Federation, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, and the Czech Republic. The top importers of forest products in 2017 were China, Germany, Austria, Sweden, and Canada. The wood industry is also seeing a trend towards sustainable and eco-friendly practices. Hotels and resorts are incorporating wood into their designs and operations, with a focus on reducing carbon emissions and minimizing resource consumption. The use of wood in construction is also becoming more popular, with many companies using sustainable and locally sourced materials. In Mexico, the wood industry is a significant sector, with the country importing 90% of its wood products and the majority coming from Chile. Mexico consumes around 700,000 cubic meters of wood per year, with a value of around $500 million. The potential for growth in the Mexican wood industry is enormous, with the country having a high demand for wood products and a large market size. The use of technology in the wood industry is also becoming more prevalent, with companies such as Timbeter using digital platforms to measure and manage wood data. This technology has the potential to improve the efficiency and sustainability of the wood industry, and is an example of how technology can be used to support a sustainable future.
