Abstract
The project aimed to promote sustainable land use and conservation in the Amazonas region of Colombia. A team of consultants from Ecosimple, International Resources Group (IRG), and their sub-contractors, including Sociedad Peruana de Derecho Ambiental (SPDA), Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF), Corporación Gestión y Derecho Ambiental (ECOLEX), Social Impact, Inc. (SI), and Patrimonio Natural (PN), conducted the study. The initiative focused on two main sectors: agro-pastoral and tourism. In the agro-pastoral sector, the consultants proposed two incentives: Incentivo a la Capitalización Rural (ICR) and Incentivo a la asistencia Técnica (IAT). ICR aimed to promote rural capitalization by providing financial support to farmers, while IAT focused on providing technical assistance to improve agricultural productivity. In the tourism sector, the consultants proposed incentives to promote sustainable tourism practices. The consultants proposed a sub-regionalization approach to implement the incentives, dividing the region into three zones: intervened, conserved, and mixed. For the intervened zone, the consultants recommended the implementation of agro-pastoral incentives, including ICR and IAT. For the conserved zone, the consultants proposed tourism incentives to promote sustainable tourism practices. The consultants analyzed the potential impact of the proposed incentives, focusing on the agro-pastoral sector. They estimated that the implementation of ICR and IAT would lead to an increase in the cultivation of late-maturing crops and the adoption of silvopastoral systems. The consultants also analyzed scenarios for the implementation of these incentives, estimating the potential impact on the region's agricultural production. The consultants presented their findings in a detailed report, including tables and data on the potential impact of the proposed incentives. The report estimated that the implementation of ICR and IAT would lead to an increase in the cultivation of late-maturing crops and the adoption of silvopastoral systems in the departments of Amazonas, Caquetá, Guaviare, Putumayo, Guainía, and Vaupés. The report also estimated the potential impact on the region's agricultural production, including the increase in hectares of late-maturing crops and silvopastoral systems. The consultants' report provided a detailed analysis of the potential impact of the proposed incentives, including data on the estimated increase in agricultural production and the potential benefits for the region's farmers and communities. The report served as a basis for the implementation of the Amazonia Andina Colombiana initiative, aiming to promote sustainable land use and conservation in the Amazonas region of Colombia.
