Abstract
The natural world provides the necessary resources for life, including water, air, and food. However, the overexploitation of these resources can lead to their depletion and contamination, ultimately threatening the very existence of life on Earth. Bosques y Áreas Protegidas, or protected forests and areas, play a crucial role in preserving the natural world. These areas are designated to protect the diverse range of plant and animal species that inhabit them, as well as the ecosystems that support them. By safeguarding these areas, we can ensure the long-term survival of these species and the ecosystems they inhabit. There are two main classes of resources to be protected: Recursos Forestales, or forest resources, and Áreas Naturales, or natural areas. Forest resources include the Patrimonio Forestal del Estado, or state forest heritage, as well as Bosques y Vegetación Protectores, or protective forests and vegetation. Natural areas, on the other hand, include Parques Nacionales, or national parks, Reservas Biológicas, or biological reserves, and Refugios de Vida Silvestre, or wildlife refuges. The Ministerio del Ambiente, or Ministry of the Environment, is responsible for administering these protected areas. The ministry works to ensure that these areas are managed sustainably, balancing the needs of human communities with the need to protect the natural world. The importance of protecting nature is not limited to the preservation of biodiversity. Protected forests and areas also play a critical role in regulating the water cycle, preventing soil erosion, and maintaining the health of ecosystems. By protecting these areas, we can also help to mitigate the impacts of climate change, such as droughts and floods. In Ecuador, the Corporación de Gestión y Derecho Ambiental ECOLEX has been working to promote the protection of natural areas through its Paralegales Comunitarios program. This program aims to empower local communities to manage their natural resources sustainably, while also promoting the protection of biodiversity and the preservation of ecosystems. The program has been supported by various organizations, including the Iniciativa para la Conservación de la Amazonía Andina (ICAA) and the Agencia de los Estados Unidos para el Desarrollo Internacional (USAID). Through its work, the program has helped to establish a network of protected areas in Ecuador, including national parks, biological reserves, and wildlife refuges. In conclusion, the protection of nature is a critical aspect of human existence. By safeguarding protected forests and areas, we can ensure the long-term survival of biodiversity, regulate the water cycle, prevent soil erosion, and maintain the health of ecosystems. The work of organizations like ECOLEX and the Paralegales Comunitarios program is essential in promoting the protection of natural areas and empowering local communities to manage their natural resources sustainably.
