Integrated Contract Broiler Farming: An Evaluation Case Study in India began in 2015 with the aim of understanding the development of the Indian poultry sector.

Abstract
The Indian poultry sector has experienced significant growth, with broiler poultry production increasing from 1.3 million tons in 2000 to 3.5 million tons in 2012. The sector's importance to employment and the national economy cannot be overstated, with over 1.5 million people employed directly and indirectly in the industry. Broiler poultry production in India is a significant contributor to the country's agricultural sector, with the majority of production coming from contract broiler farming (CBF) and non-contract broiler farming (NCBF). CBF involves farmers entering into contracts with integrators to produce broilers, while NCBF involves farmers producing broilers independently. The study aimed to understand the differences between CBF and NCBF, as well as the factors influencing farmers' adoption of contract broiler farming. The study employed a conceptual model based on Bennett's hierarchy, which posits that farmers' adoption of new practices is influenced by their knowledge, attitudes, skills, and aspirations (KASA). The study collected data from 150 farmers in CBF and NCBF systems in two states in India, Telangana and Karnataka. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The results of the study showed that farmers in CBF systems had higher levels of knowledge and skills compared to those in NCBF systems. However, farmers in NCBF systems had higher levels of motivation to adopt contract broiler farming. The study also found that farmers in CBF systems had higher levels of productivity and efficiency compared to those in NCBF systems. The study's findings have implications for policy, with the authors recommending that the government provide support to farmers in adopting contract broiler farming, particularly in terms of providing training and access to credit. The study's results also highlighted the importance of understanding the factors influencing farmers' adoption of contract broiler farming. The authors recommend that future research focus on understanding the role of KASA in farmers' adoption of new practices, as well as the impact of contract broiler farming on farmers' livelihoods. The study's findings have significant implications for the development of the Indian poultry sector, and highlight the need for policymakers to provide support to farmers in adopting contract broiler farming.
