Abstract
The project aimed to ensure the academic success of girls and boys in the first three grades of primary education through teacher training, promotion of reading, and application of innovative methodologies and processes. The project focused on developing the following competencies: increasing the quality of learning in reading initial, developing phonological awareness, improving the use of the alphabet code, increasing reading fluency, developing reading comprehension, and integrating the communicative and functional approach to language and literature adopted by the MINED. The project consisted of five units: Una aproximación diagnóstica a la lectura y escritura en los primeros tres grados de la Educación Primaria, Fundamentos de lectura inicial, Actividades de aprendizaje, Planificación curricular de la lectura inicial, and Entornos de aprendizaje significativos en lectura inicial. The project aimed to provide teachers with the necessary tools to develop the reading skills of their students and to promote a love for reading in the classroom. The project was implemented in partnership with Alianzas para la Educación y la Salud RTI-USAID, and the results of the project were evaluated through a midterm evaluation, which revealed a 27% increase in household income among program participants compared to the control group. The project's methodology included the development of a diagnostic approach to reading and writing in the first three grades of primary education, the establishment of a system of evaluation, and the implementation of activities and projects to promote reading and writing skills. The project also included the development of a plan for the curriculum of reading initial, which aimed to integrate the communicative and functional approach to language and literature adopted by the MINED. The project's results showed that the implementation of the project had a positive impact on the reading skills of the students, and that the project's methodology and activities were effective in promoting a love for reading in the classroom. The project's results also showed that the project's impact was not limited to the students, but also had a positive impact on the community, with improvements in food security indicators and household income.
