Abstract
The tool consists of a KMZ file and an Excel sheet of data, which provide geographic information broken down by Posto (administrative posts). The user can click on the geography of interest to see the estimated number of addressable households, the current electrification status, the percentage of the area covered by telecom companies, and the estimated household demand for electrification. The tool uses a combination of data layers and sources, including administrative boundaries, urbanicity, population, night lights, roads, transmission lines, economic activity, schools, health centers, settlement names, telecom towers, rivers and stream network, and affordability survey data. These data inputs were geospatially processed to produce a range of output layers, including postos, major cities, telecommunications towers, transmission lines and substations, and telecom coverage by posto. The postos layer provides data aggregated to the posto level of geography, including general geographic variables, demographic variables, electrification variables, and economic and market variables. The major cities layer displays the geographic location of cities within Mozambique, while the telecommunications towers layer shows the location of towers and their corresponding coverage area. The transmission lines and substations layer displays the energy transmission lines for Mozambique as of 2017, and the telecom coverage by posto layer shows the percentage of the area covered by telecom companies. The tool is designed to help energy access companies identify areas that are most ideal for expansion of their markets by searching for areas that exhibit their business criteria for expansion. The user can select multiple data layers at the same time and they will overlay with each other, allowing for a comprehensive analysis of the data. The tool also includes a user guide and tutorial videos to assist users in accessing and using the tool. The data inputs used in the tool are sourced from various organizations, including Humanitarian data exchange, GHS-SMOD, CIESIN, INE Mozambique, NASA, Open Street Maps, Energy Data, Open Data for Africa, WFP Mozambique, Jembi Health Systems, and USAID SAEP. The data outputs are outlined in greater detail in the Appendix A of the instructional user guide. The tool is part of the USAID Southern Africa Energy Program (SAEP) and is designed to support the program's goal of increasing access to energy in Mozambique. The tool is available for download and can be accessed using Google Earth Pro.
