Abstract
The list is envisioned to expedite the OFDA review and approval of requested pharmaceuticals, thereby maximizing OFDA resources to provide assistance to the greatest number of beneficiaries possible. The OFDA EML is based on the World Health Organization's (WHO) Model List of Essential Medicines, the WHO Interagency Emergency Health Kit (IEHK) 2011, UNFPA's Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) recommendations and kit, and the UNHCR Essential Medicines and Medical Supplies: Policy and Guidance (2011). The list is expected to treat 90 to 95% of the medical conditions encountered in OFDA-supported health programs. By selecting pharmaceuticals from the OFDA EML, partners can be assured that the products will be considered appropriate for response. The OFDA EML includes a wide range of pharmaceutical products, categorized by therapeutic class. The list includes medications for various conditions, such as infectious diseases, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, and more. Each product is listed with its corresponding category number(s) and is accompanied by explanatory notes and symbols to indicate specific indications, restrictions, and usage guidelines. The OFDA EML is intended to be used as a reference guide for NGOs and partners to select pharmaceutical products for OFDA-supported health programs. The list is regularly reviewed and revised as needed to ensure that it remains relevant and effective in addressing the health needs of beneficiaries. By using the OFDA EML, partners can simplify the pharmaceutical selection process, expedite the approval process, and maximize OFDA resources to provide assistance to the greatest number of beneficiaries possible. The OFDA EML includes a total of 143 pharmaceutical products, categorized into various therapeutic classes. The list includes medications for various conditions, such as: * Infectious diseases: antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics * Cardiovascular diseases: medications for hypertension, heart failure, and arrhythmias * Respiratory diseases: medications for asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pneumonia * Neurological disorders: medications for epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and other neurological conditions * Gastrointestinal disorders: medications for diarrhea, constipation, and other gastrointestinal conditions Each product on the OFDA EML is listed with its corresponding category number(s) and is accompanied by explanatory notes and symbols to indicate specific indications, restrictions, and usage guidelines. The list also includes a symbol indicating that a product has a restricted indication, which is reflected in red bold-faced font. The OFDA EML is an essential tool for NGOs and partners working in OFDA-supported health programs. By using this list, partners can ensure that they are selecting pharmaceutical products that are appropriate for response and meet the health needs of beneficiaries. The list is regularly reviewed and revised to ensure that it remains relevant and effective in addressing the health needs of beneficiaries.
