Abstract
The reserve covers an area of 1,293 hectares and 7,000 square meters, and is situated along the banks of the Orinoco River within the Orinoquian Andean landscape. The reserve was established in 2014 as a Reserva Natural de la Sociedad Civil (RNSC), which is a type of protected area that is voluntarily registered with the Sistema Nacional de Áreas Protegidas (SINAP) of Parques Nacionales Naturales de Colombia. The reserve is managed by the Fundación Palmarito Casanare, and its owner is Jaime Antonio González Maragua, a Colombian national. The reserve's location is characterized by a tropical savanna climate, with a geology dominated by sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. The terrain is generally flat, with some areas of gentle slopes and valleys. The reserve's soils are primarily composed of alluvial and colluvial deposits, with some areas of sandy and clayey soils. The reserve is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including tropical forests, savannas, and grasslands. The reserve's ecosystem is characterized by a high level of biodiversity, with many species of plants and animals found within its boundaries. The reserve is also home to several indigenous communities, as well as other social actors, entities, and organizations. The reserve's management plan is based on three main approaches: conservation, restoration, and sustainable use. The conservation approach is the primary strategy for managing the reserve, with the goal of maintaining the structure and functionality of the ecosystem over time. The restoration approach focuses on rehabilitating degraded areas and restoring ecosystem processes. The sustainable use approach aims to promote the use of the reserve's resources in a way that is compatible with conservation goals. The reserve's management plan also includes a zoning system, which categorizes areas within the reserve as either permitted, limited, or prohibited. The permitted areas are those that are open to human use and development, while the limited areas are those that are subject to certain restrictions and regulations. The prohibited areas are those that are closed to human use and development due to their sensitive or protected status. The reserve's management plan also includes a set of objectives and strategies for achieving conservation and sustainable use goals. These objectives include maintaining the reserve's biodiversity, promoting sustainable land use practices, and supporting the social and economic development of local communities. The reserve's management plan is based on a participatory approach, which involves the active participation of local communities, social actors, and other stakeholders in the decision-making process. The plan is also based on a set of principles and guidelines established by the "Guía para la elaboración de planes de manejo de reservas Naturales de la Sociedad Civil," which was developed in 2009 by a group of organizations including Parques Nacionales Naturales de Colombia, Asociación Red Colombiana de Reservas Naturales de la Sociedad Civil (RESNATUR), Corporación Autónoma Regional del Valle del Cauca (CVC), and Asociación Red de Reservas Naturales de la Sociedad Civil del Macizo Colombiano (SERANKWA). Overall, the Reserva Natural de la Sociedad Civil Ventanas is an important protected area in Colombia, with a rich biodiversity and a unique cultural and historical significance. Its management plan is based on a set of principles and guidelines that prioritize conservation, restoration, and sustainable use, and involves the active participation of local communities and other stakeholders.
