Abstract
The community's water and sanitation situation is characterized by limited access to safe drinking water and inadequate sanitation facilities. The majority of households rely on wells and rivers for their water needs, with many households lacking access to improved sanitation facilities. The Coumbacara community faces significant challenges in terms of water quality, with high levels of contamination detected in water samples. The community's water sources are often located far from households, making it difficult for residents to access safe drinking water. The lack of sanitation facilities contributes to the spread of waterborne diseases, with diarrhea and cholera being major health concerns. The Millennium Water and Sanitation Program, supported by USAID, has developed a plan to address the water and sanitation needs of the Coumbacara community. The plan aims to increase access to safe drinking water and improve sanitation facilities through a series of interventions. The plan includes the construction of new wells and the rehabilitation of existing ones, as well as the installation of sanitation facilities in households. The plan also includes a component on hygiene promotion, which aims to educate residents on proper hygiene practices and the importance of using sanitation facilities. The plan is expected to be implemented over a three-year period, with the goal of improving the health and well-being of the community's residents. The plan's implementation will be overseen by a steering committee, which will be responsible for ensuring that the plan is implemented on time and within budget. The plan's budget is estimated at $1.2 million, with funding provided by USAID and the Government of Senegal. The plan's implementation will be monitored through regular progress reports and evaluations, which will help to identify areas for improvement and ensure that the plan is meeting its objectives. The plan's success will depend on the effective collaboration and coordination of all stakeholders involved, including the community, local authorities, and implementing partners.
