Abstract
The program's primary focus is on adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), who are disproportionately affected by HIV. In FY19, Afya Ziwani implemented various interventions to prevent HIV transmission among AGYW, including the provision of safe spaces, life skills training, and access to HIV testing and counseling. The program also targeted fisherfolk, a high-risk group for HIV transmission, through the provision of HIV testing, counseling, and treatment services. Additionally, Afya Ziwani implemented voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) services, which have been shown to reduce the risk of HIV transmission by up to 60%. The program also provided pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to individuals at high risk of HIV acquisition. Afya Ziwani's HIV care and treatment (C&T) services have also seen significant progress, with a 27% increase in the number of individuals on antiretroviral therapy (ART) compared to the previous year. The program has also implemented a differentiated care model (DCM) to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of ART services. Furthermore, Afya Ziwani has strengthened laboratory support, including the provision of viral load testing and early infant diagnosis (EID) services. The program has also made significant progress in eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV, with a 95% reduction in the number of HIV-positive pregnant women who did not receive antiretroviral prophylaxis. Afya Ziwani has also strengthened commodity security, including the provision of antiretroviral medications and other essential commodities. In terms of health systems strengthening, Afya Ziwani has worked closely with county health management teams (CHMTs) to improve the delivery of HIV services. The program has also implemented a strategic monitoring and evaluation framework to track progress and identify areas for improvement. Additionally, Afya Ziwani has made significant progress in linking with other USAID programs and government agencies to leverage resources and expertise. Overall, Afya Ziwani's progress in FY19 demonstrates the program's commitment to addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Kenya, particularly among AGYW and other high-risk groups. The program's focus on prevention, care, and treatment services has resulted in significant improvements in HIV outcomes, and its efforts to strengthen health systems and commodity security will continue to benefit the Kenyan population in the years to come.
