Abstract
The initiative is implemented by Chemonics International Inc. and is part of the Country Development Cooperative Strategy (CDCS) for Jordan. Component One focuses on improving private sector recycling markets by enhancing business performance and profitability. This is achieved through improving managerial, technical, and access to information capacity, as well as improving the quality and quantity of recyclable materials. The initiative also aims to expand and replicate successful recycling models. In the second quarter of Fiscal Year 2021, the initiative made significant progress in improving business performance and profitability for private sector recyclers. Component Two targets the commercial sector, increasing awareness of recycling services and strengthening linkages between the commercial sector and recycling service providers. The initiative aims to galvanize commercial sector interest in recycling, cultivate a motivation to recycle by increasing waste generators' knowledge on solid waste management and recycling, and establish a business case for recycling among the commercial sector. In the second quarter of Fiscal Year 2021, the initiative made significant progress in increasing awareness of recycling services among the commercial sector. Over 500 commercial sector representatives received training on recycling practices, and 20 commercial sector companies established partnerships with recycling service providers. The initiative also supported the development, implementation, and monitoring of solid waste management plans among commercial sector companies. Component Three focuses on improving the business enabling environment for recycling services and material markets. This is achieved through strengthening national regulatory policy and enforcement for solid waste management, linking extended producer responsibility to recycling markets, and promoting domestic recycling sector through tax and trade incentives. In the second quarter of Fiscal Year 2021, the initiative made significant progress in strengthening national regulatory policy and enforcement for solid waste management. The Ministry of Environment and Water (MOENV) engaged the private sector in the implementation of solid waste management laws and strategies, and extended producer responsibility was linked to recycling markets. The initiative also promoted domestic recycling sector through tax and trade incentives. The initiative also reported significant progress in implementing activities, including training and capacity building, awareness raising, and business development. The initiative also reported on implementation challenges and modifications made, as well as knowledge sharing and collaboration with stakeholders. The initiative's reporting data and DevResults are presented in Annex I, and the implementation challenges and modifications made are presented in Section 5. The initiative's planned activities for the next quarter are presented in Section 8, and the branding communications and dissemination are presented in Section 9.
