Abstract
The program focuses on building resilience and improving livelihoods in vulnerable communities. In the coastal village of Morella, Central Maluku, the APIK program has been working with the local community, led by the Hausihu Working Group (Pokja Hausihu), to develop an action plan to address the challenges posed by climate change. The community has identified the need for flood barrier infrastructure, improved drainage systems, solar dryers, a nursery, and electronic displays for real-time weather information. Through a partnership with PT Pertamina TBBM Wayame, a regional operational unit of PT Pertamina, the community has received support for the implementation of the action plan. PT Pertamina has agreed to provide a grant for solar dryers, a nursery, and seedlings, and has committed to providing additional funding to support better access to weather information for the community. The collaboration between USAID APIK, Pokja Hausihu, and PT Pertamina TBBM Wayame commenced in 2017, and has resulted in the distribution of 20 solar dryers and a nursery packed with seedlings to the community. The solar dryers have been distributed to four neighborhood groups, and the community is expected to benefit from improved crop drying and increased income. The partnership between USAID APIK and PT Pertamina TBBM Wayame is a crucial example of how partnerships with the private sector can be leveraged to build local resilience and improve livelihoods in vulnerable communities. This project will serve as a case study to encourage other companies to engage with APIK in building local resilience. At the national level, the APIK program has made significant progress in Quarter 2 of Year 3. Highlights include the development of a national climate change adaptation strategy, the establishment of a national climate change adaptation fund, and the launch of a national climate change awareness campaign. At the sub-national level, the APIK program has been active in several regions, including East Java and Southeast Sulawesi. In East Java, the program has been working with local governments and communities to develop climate-resilient agriculture practices and improve water management systems. In Southeast Sulawesi, the program has been supporting the development of climate-resilient infrastructure and improving disaster risk reduction and management capacities. Overall, the APIK program is making significant progress in building resilience and improving livelihoods in vulnerable communities in Indonesia. The program's focus on partnerships with the private sector and local stakeholders is a key factor in its success, and will continue to be a critical component of the program's efforts to address the impacts of climate change in Indonesia.
