Abstract
The toolkit is designed to provide a "one-stop shop" for SRGBV survey instruments, collecting various data types, including the nature and extent of SRGBV. The SRGBV toolkit is a critical component of the Research for Effective Education Programming (REEP) project, which seeks to provide research evidence to inform decision-making in education programming across Africa. The REEP project builds on the work conducted under the Data for Education Research and Programming in Africa (DERP) project, which aimed to provide research, recommendations, and capacity-building activities. SRGBV is defined as acts or threats of physical, sexual, or psychological violence or abuse that are based on gendered stereotypes or that target students on the basis of their sex, sexuality, or gender identity. The violence can take place in formal and nonformal schools, on school grounds, during travel to and from school, in school dormitories, in cyberspace, or through cell phone technology. The SRGBV toolkit will involve the conduct of a comprehensive pilot of the set of instruments given in the Conceptual Framework for Measuring SRGBV. The pilot will guide the development of a final measurement toolkit for SRGBV, which will be developed in the later stages of REEP. The toolkit will consist of a suite of survey instruments (modules) that are flexible and can be used in applied research, during routine monitoring, and during impact evaluations of SRGBV prevention and response programs. The SRGBV toolkit will collect various data types, including the nature and extent of SRGBV, and will be used to inform decision-making in education programming across Africa. The toolkit will be developed in collaboration with various stakeholders, including education officials, teachers, students, and community members. The pilot will involve the administration of a set of survey instruments to a sample of students and teachers in a selected number of schools. The survey instruments will include the Survey of Attitudes Toward SRGBV, the Survey of Experiences of SRGBV, the Survey of Perceptions of School Climate, the Survey of Teacher Disciplinary Practices, and the Survey of Experiences of SRGBV (Teachers). The pilot will provide valuable information on the feasibility and effectiveness of the SRGBV toolkit, including the acceptability of the survey instruments, the response rates, and the data quality. The findings from the pilot will guide the development of the final measurement toolkit for SRGBV, which will be used to inform decision-making in education programming across Africa. The SRGBV toolkit is a critical component of the REEP project, which seeks to provide research evidence to inform decision-making in education programming across Africa. The toolkit will contribute to the development of effective SRGBV prevention and response programs, which will ultimately improve the educational experiences of students and promote gender equality in education.
