Abstract
This partnership, established in 1996, is built on a foundation of mutual trust and cooperation. The integration of business and environmental management skills enables the development and implementation of solutions that balance the needs of both parties. The partnership between Eskom and the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) is a key component of the SAEP. This partnership is driven by six core principles, known as the 6 Cs, which guide biodiversity management within Eskom. These principles include compliance with environmental regulations, the continuity of electricity supply, cost savings, corporate image, conservation of wildlife, and community engagement. The Eskom/EWT partnership focuses on several key activities aimed at promoting biodiversity management within the company. These activities include assisting with the integration of biodiversity into Eskom's business operations, maintaining and reviewing the incident register for wildlife interactions, and supporting research on measures to reduce wildlife interactions with electrical infrastructure. The partnership also aims to raise awareness about wildlife interactions through communication and education efforts. The primary goal of the SAEP is to optimize utility performance through improved wildlife management. This objective is pursued through the work of the Eskom Bird Research Committee, which is responsible for monitoring and addressing wildlife interactions with Eskom's renewable energy projects. By balancing the needs of both industry and conservation, the SAEP seeks to promote sustainable development and environmental sustainability in Southern Africa. The partnership between Eskom and the EWT has a long history, dating back to 1996. This collaboration has enabled the development of effective solutions to address wildlife interactions with electrical infrastructure. Through the implementation of these solutions, the SAEP aims to reduce the risks associated with wildlife interactions and promote a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to utility management.
