Abstract
The project aims to provide supplementary outlines for multigrade classes in the Philippines, specifically for grades 1 and 2. The outlines are designed to guide teachers in handling a multiple-grouped class, where pupils learn and work at different levels of competence. The multigrade approach is based on the principle that pupils are expected to do tasks and produce outputs according to the set objectives for their grade levels. For example, grades 1-2 pupils may listen to the same reading aloud/listening story and answer the same set of questions, but may focus on different elements of the story or reading skill. The approach also involves differentiated instruction, where learners in each grade engage in learning tasks appropriate to their levels of learning. The Basa Pilipinas multigrade plan spreads the units of curriculum content in grades 1-2 and grades 2-3 across two grades over two years, rather than one. The plan produces two sets or cycles of multigrade outlines - one for even years and another for odd years. The outlines are designed to be used alternately for the two cycles, with the grades 1-2 multigrade class following the grade 1 teacher's guide in one cycle and the grade 2 teacher's guide in the other cycle. The supplementary outlines for multigrade classes in Ilokano are designed to cater to the needs of pupils in grades 1 and 2. The outlines include a selection of stories from Adarna House and Vibal Publishing House, which were used with permission from the publishers. The outlines also include non-text materials, such as songs, stories, poems, pictures, and photos, which are copyright to their respective owners. The Basa Pilipinas multigrade framework involves a two-week instructional sequence, where pupils in grades 1-2 listen to and discuss the same read aloud story in the first instructional week, while they read and discuss different leveled readers in the second instructional week. The framework also involves differentiated activities that are aligned to the respective objectives per grade level. The project has distributed multigrade materials, including the grades 1-2 multigrade outlines for even cycle, which were developed in 2014. The materials are designed to provide teachers with a guide on how to implement the multigrade approach in their classrooms. The project aims to support the Department of Education's reading program and provide teachers with the necessary resources to improve the reading skills of pupils in multigrade classes.
