Abstract
Multigrade classes consist of two or more different grade levels taught by one teacher in a single grade classroom. These classes are often found in rural and isolated communities, where the population is scattered. Basa Pilipinas organizes training for multigrade teachers and develops supplementary materials to help them prepare for the unique challenges of teaching multiple grade levels. The project's approach is based on the principle that pupils learn and work at different levels of competence in a multigrade classroom. To address this, the project develops instructional sequences that cater to the needs of each grade level, while still allowing pupils to work together on the same general topic or theme. The multigrade supplementary outlines for English classes in grades 1 and 2 are designed to be used in conjunction with the existing curriculum and teacher guides. The outlines provide a two-week instructional sequence for each week, with activities and tasks tailored to the needs of each grade level. For example, in Week 31, the theme is "Respect and Kindness to Others," and the Read Aloud story is "The Black Kitten" for Grade 2, while Grade 1 pupils refer to the Grades 1 and 2 English Teacher's Guides for discussion. The project's approach to multigrade teaching is based on the idea that pupils can learn and work together on the same topic, but at different levels of competence. This is reflected in the instructional sequences, which provide a range of activities and tasks for each grade level. The project also recognizes the importance of adapting to the needs of each grade level, and provides guidance on how to do this. The Basa Pilipinas project has developed a framework for multigrade teaching that is designed to be flexible and adaptable to the needs of each school and community. The project's approach is based on the principles of inclusivity, equity, and quality education, and is designed to support the development of multigrade teachers and pupils in the Philippines. The project's supplementary outlines for English classes in grades 1 and 2 provide a range of activities and tasks for each week, including Read Aloud stories, Leveled Readers, and other activities. The outlines are designed to be used in conjunction with the existing curriculum and teacher guides, and provide a flexible and adaptable approach to multigrade teaching. The Basa Pilipinas project has been developed in collaboration with the Department of Education and other stakeholders, and is designed to support the development of multigrade teachers and pupils in the Philippines. The project's approach is based on the principles of inclusivity, equity, and quality education, and is designed to provide a high-quality education to all pupils, regardless of their grade level or background. The project's supplementary outlines for English classes in grades 1 and 2 are designed to be used in the school year beginning on odd years (2015, 2017, 2019...). The outlines provide a two-week instructional sequence for each week, with activities and tasks tailored to the needs of each grade level. The project's approach is based on the idea that pupils can learn and work together on the same topic, but at different levels of competence.
