Abstract
The project aims to support the Department of Education's K-12 Curriculum Guide in Mother Tongue, specifically for grades 1 and 2. The supplementary outlines are designed for quarter 3, June 2016, and are intended to be used in conjunction with the Grade 1 Sinugbuanong Binisaya Teacher Guide. The outlines cover various themes, including interesting things about culture, places in the community, local arts and crafts, and natural resources in the community. Each week, the outlines provide a read-aloud story, theme, leveled readers, and multigrade notes. The read-aloud stories are designed to be engaging and relevant to the students' lives, while the leveled readers provide opportunities for students to practice their reading skills. The multigrade notes section provides additional guidance for teachers on how to handle differentiated lessons and activities for students in grades 1 and 2. The notes highlight the importance of adapting instruction to meet the needs of students at different levels of proficiency. The project's technical director, Nancy Clark-Chiarelli, EdD, and author, Bonita Marie Cabiles, have worked together to develop the supplementary outlines. The project has also received support from the Department of Education and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The outlines are organized into weekly themes, with each day providing a set of objectives, subject matter, teacher activities, learner activities, and multigrade notes. The objectives are aligned with the Department of Education's curriculum guide and are designed to promote students' language skills, including alphabet knowledge, oral language, phonics and word recognition, and reading comprehension. The project's focus on multigrade classes recognizes the importance of providing instruction that meets the needs of students at different levels of proficiency. By providing supplementary outlines that are tailored to the needs of grades 1 and 2 students, the project aims to support teachers in delivering effective instruction and promoting students' language skills. The outlines also emphasize the importance of cultural relevance and community engagement. The read-aloud stories and leveled readers are designed to be engaging and relevant to students' lives, while the multigrade notes provide guidance on how to adapt instruction to meet the needs of students from diverse backgrounds. Overall, the Basa Pilipinas Project's supplementary outlines for multigrade classes in Sinugbuanong Binisaya provide a valuable resource for teachers and students in the Philippines. The project's focus on language skills, cultural relevance, and community engagement makes it an important contribution to the field of education.
