Abstract
WCS has been working together with its partners, including the Jane Goodall Institute, Tree Talk, and Wildlife Clubs of Uganda, to provide support to government institutions and communities in their efforts to conserve the region's natural resources. One of the program objectives is to identify alternative livelihoods for the people living near protected landscapes in Northern Uganda. This has led to the development of tourism investment opportunities in the region. WCS and the Uganda Tourism Association have undertaken a study to gauge the potential of tourism in northern Uganda and to promote its development and expansion. The study focused on untapped or underutilized attractions in several districts in the West Nile sub-region, central part of the Northern Region, and Karamoja. The districts included in the study are Nebbi, Arua, Moyo, and Adjumani in the West Nile; Amuru, Gulu, Lamwo, Kitgum, and Pader in the central part of the Northern Region; and Kaabong in Karamoja. Murchison Falls National Park was not included in the study due to its already well-developed tourism infrastructure. The study aimed to introduce prospective investors to the variety of natural, cultural, and historical attractions in the region that can be drawn on for tourism. It also aimed to support the Ugandan government's plans to diversify tourism products within the country, particularly along the Nile. The study's findings are presented in this document, which provides information on tourism potential along the Albert Nile and in the landscapes surrounding more prominent conservation areas of northern Uganda. The document provides key findings of a market survey, as well as an introduction to the region's attractions, potential activities, and investment opportunities. The northern Uganda districts referred to in this report are Nebbi, Arua, Moyo, and Adjumani in the West Nile; Agago, Amuru, Gulu, Lamwo, Nwoya, Kitgum, Pader in the North Central region; and Kaabong in the North Eastern region. The region offers a range of attractions, including wildlife-rich landscapes, scenic rivers, cultural and historical sites, and potential trails. The document highlights the potential of tourism in northern Uganda, particularly along the Albert Nile, and provides information on the region's natural, cultural, and historical resources. It also provides an overview of the investment opportunities available in the region, including the development of tourist facilities and infrastructure. The document is intended to serve as an initial guide to prospective investors and visitors to the region. It provides a comprehensive overview of the tourism potential in northern Uganda and highlights the opportunities available for investment and development. The region's natural, cultural, and historical resources make it an attractive destination for tourists, and the document provides information on how to tap into these resources and develop the region's tourism industry. The study's findings indicate that there are significant opportunities to expand the scope and scale of tourism activities throughout northern Uganda. The region's attractions, including wildlife-rich landscapes, scenic rivers, cultural and historical sites, and potential trails, offer a range of opportunities for investment and development. The document provides information on how to access these opportunities and develop the region's tourism industry. The document highlights the importance of responsible private and government investment in the region's tourism industry. It emphasizes the need to protect and preserve the area's varied and unique resources, while also generating economic benefits for local communities. The document provides a comprehensive overview of the tourism potential in northern Uganda and highlights the opportunities available for investment and development.
