Abstract
The program, launched in 2018, focused on rural areas where access to educational resources was limited. Initial assessments identified a significant shortage of reading materials in local languages, hindering children's ability to learn and develop essential literacy skills. To address this issue, the program implemented a book distribution strategy, targeting schools and community centers in underserved regions. The initiative partnered with local organizations to translate and print books in Swahili and other local languages, making them more accessible to children. The books covered a range of subjects, including mathematics, science, and social studies, as well as stories and folktales that reflected the local culture. Implementation of the program involved a multi-faceted approach. Trained educators and community leaders were responsible for distributing the books, conducting workshops, and providing guidance on how to use the materials effectively. The program also established a network of community libraries, where children could access the books and engage in reading activities. By the end of the first year, over 10,000 books had been distributed to schools and community centers across the country. Midterm evaluations revealed a significant increase in children's reading proficiency and a corresponding improvement in academic performance. The program's impact was particularly notable in areas where children had previously had limited access to educational resources. The initiative's success was attributed to the collaborative efforts of local stakeholders, including educators, community leaders, and parents, who worked together to promote literacy and education among children. The program's long-term goals include expanding the book distribution network, establishing a national literacy framework, and promoting a culture of reading among children and adults alike. By addressing the shortage of reading materials in local languages, the Ngazi ya Tatu initiative has made a significant contribution to improving education outcomes in Tanzania and promoting a more literate and informed society.
