Abstract
The assistance is focused on addressing the needs of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in both countries. As of August 2011, there were 172,969 refugees in Liberia, with the majority residing in camps along the border with Côte d'Ivoire. The refugees are primarily from Côte d'Ivoire, with smaller numbers from Guinea, Ghana, and other neighboring countries. In addition to the refugees in Liberia, there were also 17,159 refugees in Guinea, 4,295 in Ghana, and 913 in Togo. The humanitarian assistance provided by the United States includes food, shelter, and other essential items. The assistance is being implemented by various UN agencies, including UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, and ICRC, as well as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as OCHA, IOM, and CRS. The assistance is focused on addressing the immediate needs of the refugees and IDPs, as well as supporting their long-term recovery and reintegration into their communities. The affected areas in Côte d'Ivoire include the Western region, where the majority of the refugees are from. The humanitarian assistance is being provided to support the refugees in camps and settlements, as well as to support the host communities that are providing shelter and assistance to the refugees. In Liberia, the affected areas include the border regions with Côte d'Ivoire, where the majority of the refugees are residing. The humanitarian assistance is being coordinated by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and is being implemented in partnership with the governments of Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia, as well as with the international community. The assistance is being provided through a range of channels, including food aid, shelter, and other essential items, as well as support for livelihoods, health, and protection services. The humanitarian situation in the region remains critical, with ongoing conflict and instability affecting the ability of people to access basic services and livelihoods. The humanitarian assistance provided by the United States is an essential component of the international response to the crisis, and is helping to support the refugees and IDPs in Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia.
