Abstract
The conflict in Côte d'Ivoire led to a significant influx of refugees into neighboring countries, including Liberia, Guinea, and Ghana. As of June 16, 2011, there were 133,714 refugees in Liberia, 2,971 in Guinea, and 16,720 in Ghana. The humanitarian response to the crisis is being led by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in collaboration with other organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The response includes provision of food, shelter, and other essential services to affected populations. The affected areas in Côte d'Ivoire include the western, central, and northern regions, while in Liberia, the affected areas are primarily in the western and northern regions. The humanitarian response is focused on providing assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees, with a particular emphasis on protection, health, and livelihoods. The humanitarian situation in Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia is characterized by a high level of vulnerability, particularly among women and children. The conflict has resulted in significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and homes, making it difficult for people to access basic services. The humanitarian response is being coordinated through the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), with support from various international organizations, including the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The response includes provision of emergency food assistance, shelter, and other essential services to affected populations. The humanitarian situation in Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia is a complex issue, requiring a coordinated and sustained response to address the needs of affected populations. The humanitarian response is focused on providing assistance to IDPs and refugees, with a particular emphasis on protection, health, and livelihoods.
