Abstract
The outbreak spread rapidly throughout the country, with cases reported in all 10 departments. The Haitian government, in collaboration with international organizations, implemented a comprehensive response to the outbreak, including the establishment of cholera treatment facilities (CTFs) and oral rehydration points. As of January 9, 2011, there were over 20,000 reported cases of cholera in Haiti, with the majority of cases occurring in the Artibonite, North, and West departments. The Port-au-Prince area was also severely affected, with a high concentration of cases reported in the municipalities of Carrefour, Delmas, Gressier, Pétion-Ville, and Port-au-Prince. The USAID humanitarian assistance to Haiti for the cholera outbreak included support for the establishment of CTFs and oral rehydration points. The USAID/OFDA cholera partners, including Concern, CRS, IMC, IOM, and Samaritan's Purse, worked together to provide health, logistics, and relief commodities to affected areas. The USAID/HAITI assistance program also supported the coordination and information management efforts, while the USAID/OTI assistance program focused on water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives. The cholera treatment facilities were established in all 10 departments, with a total of 253 operational CTFs and 45 planned CTFs. The operational CTFs were distributed across the country, with the highest concentration in the West department (32 operational CTFs) and the Port-au-Prince area (111 operational CTFs). The planned CTFs were also distributed across the country, with the highest concentration in the North department (26 planned CTFs) and the Port-au-Prince area (6 planned CTFs). The implementing partners for the cholera response included ACF, CECI, CRS, IMC, IOM, PIH, and others. The CDC, HHS, IOM, MSH, OCHA, WHO/PAHO, CHAMP, LMS, PROMARK, SCMS, and SDSH also provided support for the response efforts. The USAID humanitarian assistance to Haiti for the cholera outbreak was a critical component of the response efforts, providing essential support for the establishment of CTFs, oral rehydration points, and other health initiatives.
